Both the roller wheel and rear tire are subject to some pretty rapid wear... Mattel Toys actually built a friction drive bike in 1964 that I believe utilized a METAL roller... pretty valuable bike, but a pretty lousy machine all the same. Another factor is traction. Sand and water become your worst enemies. You also lose power by drag. Various means have been devised over the years to get around friction (roller) drive: direct/shaft (some whacky Euro moped mutants mostly), primary/secondary belts (Whizzer), and motor-wheels (heyday from around 1915-21), where a 3rd motorized wheel was bolted or welded on to the rear wheel; these were made mostly by Smith ('Moto-Wheel') and another firm, Merkel ('Flying Wheel'). I recall some other company early on had a rear bolt on contraption that operated directly behind the rear wheel like a trailer. Motor Wheels weren't very well built and tended to crap out at under 1,000 miles. You can still find them for sale ocassionally in the $750-2000 range in collectors magazines: but beware that the hard rubber wheels are impossible to replace today. I've seen 3 over the past year and none were functional. My advice is to get an original H or J model Whizzer in the low $2,000 range, enjoy it and watch it appreciate gradually over time. These are the most reliable models and will surprise you with both their performance and reliability. Jack.

And what kind of oil do I feed it, the two cycle >oil that goes into the gas mix? >-Roman > > > >Roman; Yup, a pretty stupid question my friend. How do you know when to add oil? CHECK THE DIPSTICK. Two strokers burn oil as a part of normal combustion. Peds are seen in 2 ways: the kind where you have to mix the gas and oil yourself (2 stroke oil mind you NOT 40 WT Valvoline! You mix it 32 parts gas to 1 part oil and sort of slosh it around or better yet premix it in a plastic gallon gas can) OR it may have an oil injection unit. Simply fill that reserviour up with 2 stroke oil and it'll do the rest. If you run either an improper gas/oil mix or no oil at all, you'll be a biped instead of riding a moped. The thing'll sieze up on you and it'll cost you more than the machine's probably worth to fix. Jack.

#18. Newest scooters from India - from Danny

Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 19:42:41 -0400 (EDT) From: Danny <danny@dreamscape.com> Subject: Newest scooters from India Just thought everyone might find this interesting, even if it's from January of this year. It's from the website of a business publication in New Delhi, India called "Business Standard". BTW, the Bajaj Chetak is clearly a Vespa clone, which means the new 150cc 4-stroke Bajaj Legend will *also* be a Vespa clone -- but in a metal monocoque body. The potential ramifications are quite interesting. ; ) ~ Danny ~ Full Moon SC Syracuse, New York ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Full Moon SC: <http://www.dreamscape.com/danny/fmsc.html> Syracuse SKA: <http://www.dreamscape.com/danny/SyracuseSKA.html> -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- ---------- Forwarded text from the Business Standard website ---------- BS Motoring Desk in New Delhi TVS Suzuki scooter The domestic scooter market is set to witness a fierce battle on the technology front, with the four major players -- Bajaj Auto, TVS Suzuki, LML and Kinetic Honda -- lining up a range of four stroke models, primarily drawn from the domestic engineering pool with international design support. TVS Suzuki announced the launch of its 150 cc four stroke scooter in August 1998, priced with an eye at the Bajaj market pie. "It will be priced at about Rs 500 plus-minus the Bajaj product" said managing director Venu Srinivasan. The launch came amidst the unveiling by market leader Bajaj Auto of two of its four stroke models -- the 150 cc Legend and the 75 cc Saffire -- at the Auto Expo 98. Kanpur-based LML Ltd had already announced the launch of its four-stroke 100cc scooter by mid-1999, while Kinetic Honda may launch 100cc and 125cc four stroke scooters this year, the plans for which are yet to be made public. The models are in the final stages of development at Honda Motor's R&D centre in Japan. Most manufacturers are eyeing the Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000 segment, which is likely to become the most competitive slice of the Indian scooter-market pie. While Bajaj's Legend will be launched in the second half of this year, the tubular space frame Saffire, the first product of the technical collaboration between Bajaj Auto and the Tokyo R&D, Japan, is slated to be launched in January 1999. Bajaj Auto hopes to score a direct hit at the Kinetic Honda customer segment with its Saffire which has a 3-speed automatic transmission system with front disc brakes. Priced at about Rs 30,000, the company has put in additional safety and utility features to pull in the additional market share, and hopes to begin production at the level of 4000 per day. In contrast, the Bajaj Legend, a conventional-looking scooter which looks like an upgraded version of the Chetak, will be positioned to fight the battle in a wider segment. Priced at around Rs 35,000, the Legend's USP will be its latest integrated monocoque body. Bajaj Auto Ltd has chalked out a Rs 700 crore (Rs 100 crore = Rs 1 billion) investment plan over the next five years, which includes setting up a new plant and product upgradation to check the downslide in its market share. The company is setting up its third plant which will be primarily dedicated to the manufacture of new four stroke scooters and motorcycles that will take up the company's total production capacity to 2 million vehicles by next year. TVS Suzuki has chalked out a Rs 170 crore investment plan for setting up a production facility with a capacity of 250,000 scooters with four stroke engines. The company scouted for international technology in developing a 150cc capacity four stroke model. TVS is looking at 10 to 15 per cent of the market in the scooter segment on the strength of new models. Srinivasan said: "We spent only Rs 20 crore for the development of the four stroke scooter. Our four stroke scooter was launched yesterday and has a capacity of 150cc". "Though Suzuki makes scooters, it does not have geared scooters so they had to develop it specially for us which would have been expensive. We agreed to do it on our own and took some help is some areas to benchmark it from international companies" Srinivasan explained. LML had already announced its intention to launch a 100cc scooter from its Italian collaborator Piaggio's stable next year. Deepak Singhania, managing director, while ruling out a complete shift to four-stroke models, said the company would meet the emission norms through a combination of four-stroke and two-stroke models fitted with catalytic converters. Singhania conceded that four-stroke was the best technology available in respect of lowering the emission levels, but insisted that LML would weigh all options available. Kinetic Honda has decided to strengthen its presence with proposed launches of two four stroke scooters by the middle of this year. The products are currently being developed by Honda Motor's research facilities in Japan. Siddhartha Mukherji, senior marketing manager, told Business Standard: "We plan to launch our four stroke scooter sometimes in second quarter of 1998. We are looking at a 100cc or a 125cc model, the price range of the 100cc would be around 38,000 while the 125cc would be around Rs 40,000 to 45,0000". He elaborated that the company had decided to price the products higher than the competition but that they would incorporate a superior technology. "We have not decided how much we can sell or what volume, as work on this is going on in Japan". Kinetic had earlier looked at the options: catalytic converters, fuel injection system or a four stroke engine. It eventually settled on a four stroke technology as the solution to meet the fuel emission norms as the other options threw up various maintenance problems.
