But, you'd definitely want something with very good shocks and stable roadholding and in that area, nothing beats the Sachs Prima or Eagle and the Piaggio Si. Both will give you ample torque and hold up quite well. You'd also need to use the highest quality, all synthetic premix 2-stroke oil, like Red Line. It is quite common inEurope to go on long moped trips, so I don't see why you couldn't do it here. Good luck. Both the rear tire and the neoprene roller are subject to both wear and drag... also sand and water become your enemies, and combined, they become your mortal enemies. I believe the unit sells for about $500.00 Fox (an old minibike outfit back east) sold a similar unit back in the 60's-early 70's. These are 2-strokers, which have further problems. The best units are those that combine a primary/secondary pulley system, like Whizzer (1939-64). There is currently a de-horsepowered reproduction being produced as a complete bike (about $2 grand) see; www.whizzermotorbike.com for info. I have been experimenting with a similar unit of my own design based on Honda's GX31 4-stroke weed trimmer motor. Date: Sat, 7 Nov 1998 07:37:47 -0500 From: "Rob" <stagis@megahits.com> Subject: RE: moped durability *grin* Not bad...I like it. Reminds me of my dreams of long-distance cruising in a small dinghy..... Let's see...durability-wise? Get something with a tubular frame, vs. stamped-steel...Sachs engines are good, as are Puchs and Vespas. Spares of everything - spokes (if wire wheels), tiretubes, wires, cables, anything that'll make the thing stop if it breaks. I think I'd invest in a big-engine kit for anything I'd take. It'd be illegal, technically, but would make those long hills a LOT easier to stomach. I think any decent moped would haul a bicycle trailer without a lot of trouble - the more streamlined, the better, actually. And as with a motorcycle, a windshield of any kind will help. But all this adds weight. Treating it like a back-packing trip would probably be the way to go. You can carry 50-60 pounds of stuff in a backpack and live out of it for a week or so, if you're careful with food and water...and that ain't much weight. Add some spares, say 10 pounds or so, a decent (probably home-made) windshield that doesn't break airflow to the engine - this would be a small affair, I guess. You'd be fine. the only problem I can see is vibration. Take ANY moped you're gonna buy and get it going at full speed. I know my Vespa (which I ride around town exclusively) vibrates like a devil. If I had to go long-distance on it, I'd probably walk.
