Electronic rpm meters only count the ignition 'contacts' and are in 2 types,
one collects from the sparkplug wire , and are not aware of more cylinders,
(every 2 shaft cycles 1 spark) works with 1/2/4/1000 cylinders as you
like)

other collects this signal from the coil or ignition points contact. this
one is cylinder depended scaled, you can adjust this by puting on a new
scale on it for ex. 1/4 of the normal rpm, how conveniant, because you make
more rpm as a car :). you can always ask a friend car mechanic, if you may
bench mark it on a car-ignition-computer to get it accurate

i used a do-it -your selve kit (i'll look if i can find a web seller) only
raw read out with 15 leds
