Tom, just turning the key on will not have any effect on the choke of a Spree
or Elite as it is powered from the generator not the battery.
The choke on the Honda is very stable and normally would not require service.
The biggest problem is that the gas jet that feeds the choke is very small
and easily plugged with the smallest spec of dirt and cleaning can be
difficult if a spec get lodged in that tiny hole. The jet is so small and
placed in such a position that you cannot see light through the hole to
confirm it is open. I use carb cleaner from the inside of the bowl and see
if it goes through and fills up the small well on the other side. For a
stubborn one, I have a wire brush that has wire fine enough to go through the
hole.
Be careful cleaning this jet not to force something into it that would
enlarge the hole as that would result in too much extra fuel for the cold
engine and it would not run right until it is completely warm and the choke
closed.
For Tom, try a different carb bowl and see if it solves that cold running
problem.
For Matt, try a little carb cleaner in your gas tank before cleaning the carb.
