Handful of marbles sound? All of the time or only when the engine is under heavy load? If it is when the engine is under load, you are probably hearing pinging/knock. This is most commonly caused by: 1. the ignition timing being out of adjustment, or 2. a lean fuel/air ratio. If adjusting the timing doesn't make it stop, suspect a vacuum leak. These usually occur when one of the little hoses that may attach to the carb come off, a loose or cracked intake boot (or leaky carb-to-intake gasket) or, most seriously, a leaky crank seal. Check the timing, then check for missing or cracked hoses. Tighten the intake boot (check for cracks, also). If that doesn't fix it, you may need professional help - unless you are up for an overhaul - new rings, seals, gaskets and carb overhaul. On larger engines you can check for vacuum leaks by spraying soapy water around likely leak spots and see if the idle improves. On small 2 strokes, I'm not sure how well that works.
