The person at the 850 number (Frank, by the way) was very knowledgeable about the MX-5 but was pretty emphatic that I be sure the unit would fit the bike since he would probably not allow me to return it. He cited three criteria (a) seat tube must extend at least 9" above top center pedal position (to clear motor) (b) seat tube must be 1 1/8" dia. and (c) the gap between the seat tube and the closest point on the wheel must be between 2" and 3 3/8". My problem is this distance is less than 2" if measured near the crank but well within this distance further up the tube where the motor would attach. Frank insisted that the measurement should be taken at the closest point but couldn't give me a reasonable explanation why. Taking another tack, I found a picture of the GT frame and then scaled the advert picture of the MX-5 mounted on a bike to the same size using the 26" wheel as an index. Then I overlaid the two pictures and it looks as though the MX-5 would fit.
